Brigadier General Rodney L. Johnson

The Provost Marshal General of the Army and

Commanding General United States Army Criminal Investigation Command

Brigadier General Rodney L. Johnson was born in Atkinson, Nebraska on 13 April 1955 and raised in the rural area of Burke, South Dakota.

He graduated from South Dakota State University in May 1977 and subsequently received a Reserve Army commission as a

  • Second Lieutenant in the Military Police Corps.

  • Key assignments have included Commander, 545 th Division MP Company (1 st Cav Div), Fort Hood Texas;

  • S3, 720 th MP Battalion, Fort Hood, Texas;

  • Chief, Plans Branch, Office of the Provost Marshal, HQ USAREUR;

  • Executive Officer, 97 th MP Battalion in the Federal Republic of Germany; Commander, 720 th MP Battalion, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and Fort Hood, Texas;

  • Chief, Current Operations, Department of Military Support, ODCSOPS, Washington, DC;

  • Commander, 14 th MP Brigade, Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri;

  • Executive Officer, Director of the Army Staff, Washington, DC, and

  • Executive Officer, Commanding General TRADOC, Fort Monroe, VA.

  • Brigadier General Johnson assumed duties as the Commandant, USA Military Police School on 28 June 2004 and relinquished responsibilities on July 7, 2006.

  • He assumed responsibilities of the Provost Marshal General of the Army and Commanding General, United States Army Criminal Investigation Command on 14 July 2006.

Brigadier General Johnson has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Sociology from South Dakota State University;

  • Master of Science Degree in Police Science and Public Administration from Wichita State University;

  • Master of Science Degree in National Security Strategy from the National War College.

  • His military education includes the MP Officer Basic Course, the MP Officer Advanced Course, the Combined Arms Services Staff School, the Command and General Staff College, the DoD Emergency Preparedness Course, and the National War College.

  • He is also a graduate of the FBI National Academy.

Brigadier General Johnson’s awards and decorations include:

  • the Distinguished Service Medal,

  • the Legion of Merit (3OLC),

  • Defense Meritorious Service Medal,

  • Meritorious Service Medal (4OLC),

  • Army Commendation Medal (2OLC),

  • Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal (Bronze Star),

  • Humanitarian Service Medal, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal (OLC),

  • Armed Forces Reserve Medal,

  • Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Medal,

  • Airborne Wings, and the Army Staff Badge.

  • Additionally, he wears the Joint Meritorious Unit Award (OLC),

  • the Army Superior Unit Award (OLC),

  • and the Coast Guard Meritorious Unit Commendation; and is an

  • MPOA Distinguished Honor Graduate,

  • USAMPS Distinguished Instructor,

  • CGSC Military Police Honor Graduate; and

  • recipient of the Military Police Regimental Association’s Order of The Marechaussee.

The United States Army Criminal Investigation Command

(abbreviated CID not "CIC") is a United States federal law enforcement agency that investigates serious crimes and violations of civilian and military law within the United States Army.

Headquartered at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, CID was established as a major Army command in 1971.

Worldwide, the organization has slightly less than 3'000 soldiers and civilians, of which approximately 900 are CID Special Agents.

The primary mission of the CID, according to the organization's website, is to:

* Investigate serious crime

* Conduct sensitive and/or serious investigations

* Collect, analyze and disseminate criminal intelligence

* Conduct protective service operations

* Provide forensic laboratory support

* Maintain Army criminal records

Additionally, CID may perform the following special missions:

* Perform logistical security, from manufacturers to soldiers on the battlefield

* Develop criminal intelligence to develop countermeasures to combat subversive activities
   on the battlefield

* Criminal investigations to include war crimes and in some cases crimes against coalition
   forces and host nation personnel

* Protective service operations for key personnel on and off the battlefield
